Toe Nail Fungus
Millions of Americans suffer from toenail fungus, and up until now it has been very hard to resolve. It can be unsightly, uncomfortable and embarrassing. The fungus usually starts on one or two nails which become cloudy or discolored. Over time, they may thicken, change shape, separate from the toe, or yellowish, crumbly material may form under it and there may be an odor.
People who live or work in a hot, humid place, or wear shoes that keep their feet sweaty and moist are more likely to get toenail fungus than people who don’t. Diabetics and people with a compromised immune system also are at risk. It can spread from person to person by sharing a towel or nail clippers and by walking barefoot, so it’s not uncommon for several people in the same house to have it.
While it most likely won’t cause any other serious health issues, it can be painful and make it difficult to wear certain kinds of shoes.
Until recently, there wasn’t a good way to get rid of toenail fungus. But now, there is a new FDA-approved treatment that uses a low-level laser (cold laser) to help treat toenail fungus. The Lunula Laser is an exciting breakthrough for treating painful, thick, discolored, infected toenails.
It uses low level laser light to target onychomycosis, more commonly known as fungus. Because the laser light is able to pass through the nail, it is able to work on getting rid of the fungus that lives below it. The laser does this without causing any damage to the nail or the skin around it. It’s pain free, there are no known side effects, with no downtime or recovery time required. In fact, as little as four short sessions are needed to treat the affected area.
While you won’t see results immediately, you’ll notice healthy nail start to show at the cuticle as your nails grow. Results are usually seen in about 16 weeks, but it can take nine to twelve months for the nail to grow out completely.
Once a fungus becomes entrenched in your nail, the same barrier that was effective in protecting against infection, now works to protect the fungus. This makes it difficult for topical creams and polishes to treat the fungus because it’s very hard for it to reach the fungus. The laser light passes through the nail to target the fungus, offering new hope in treating this condition.
